Casey Luna Obituary
Surrounded by his loving family, Casey Luna passed away at his home in Belen on June 2, 2026. He was 95 years old.
Casey was born in Cañón de Jemez, N.M., on May 26, 1931. He and his five siblings were raised by their amazing mother, Ruby, in a tiny, but loving home in northwest Albuquerque. Casey attended Albuquerque High School and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army.
Casey was selling cars and trucks at Frontier Ford in Albuquerque when he met Beverly Fulton, a customer to whom he gave special attention and soon dated. The couple married in 1965, beginning a 60-year marriage filled with love, happiness, and adventure.
With Beverly at his side, Casey opened a Ford dealership of his own in Mountainair and, later, in Belen. Highly successful, his dealership won many national sales and service awards from the Ford Motor Co. His loyal employees enjoyed years of employment under Casey's kind leadership. Casey contributed to his community in countless ways, including donating a flag and pole from the old Ford dealership to the Moose Lodge in Rio Communities.
Always a great sports car fan, Casey built and drove stock cars, winning two Albuquerque Speedway championships in 1956 and 1957. He also honorably participated in the World of Outlaws racing circuit and attended the Jimmy Sills School of Open Wheel Racing. Beginning in the 1980s, the Lunas owned and ran Ford engine-powered sprint cars in competitions across the country. Their famous #10 car won national championships in 1989 and 1996. In recognition of his massive impact on the sport, Casey was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2010.
Entering politics, Casey was elected New Mexico Lieutenant Governor, serving under Governor Bruce King from 1991 to 1995. Of all his achievements as lieutenant governor, he was most proud of helping the average citizen by cutting through red tape to solve problems, large and small. He dedicated his time to numerous New Mexico boards and commissions, including serving as a member of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority. His business acumen was widely recognized, earning his enterprises a regular spot on the Hispanic Business Magazine's annual Top 500 Businesses list.
Casey lived a life of great adventures, ranging from race car racing to travel around the world, flights in a jet fighter, and traveling on Air Force 1. He was a member of the Boy Scouts - Troop 197. Casey enjoyed traveling in his and Beverly's RVs, taking cruises, racing, cooking, music, reading, doing crossword puzzles, golfing, fishing, politics, practical jokes, and Lobo sports. Since their retirement, the Lunas lived much of each year among their many dear friends in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. A book-length biography and a Country Western song were written to honor Casey's life and the happiness he brought to so many friends, neighbors, and perfect strangers. He was recognized nearly every place he traveled.
Most of all, he loved his family and they adored him. He loved New Mexico, its food, music, scenery, and people. Casey Luna was a great man who always thought of others first and never failed to lend a helping hand and his loving spirit wherever he traveled and wherever he lived.
Casey is preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Sanchez; his daughter, Risa Luna; his son, Mike Luna; and his brother, George Luna.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Luna; his daughters, Marion Luna-Brem (Tim), Debbie Johnson (Rod), and Shalamaree "Sha" Luna-Hicks (Richard); his son, Steve Wright (Robbie); 14 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Reyna Luna, and three brothers, Dick, Boni, and Roy.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be held following the services at the Belen Sheriff Posse.
