Donald Ray Akin

Donald Ray Akin was born May 28, 1945 to Robert and Thelma Akin. He transitioned quietly from this life in his sleep on March 22, 2026. He was the youngest of three children who spent much of his childhood in Corona, NM where he played football and helped run the family business, a gas station. It was that family business that became his life's work. A gas station and mechanic shop was opened in Belen, NM in the 1960's. It was there that he met the love of his life, Barbara. Together they spent their lives working in the family business and raising three children, two boys and a girl. It was also that family business that he met many wonderful people who would become lifelong friends, and where he was able to help many people with his quiet generosity and gruff demeanor.

Donald is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Ann Akin, his daughter Mary Elizabeth Akin, his mother Thelma and father Robert Akin.

Donald is survived by his sons, Eric Akin of Belen, NM, and Byron and wife Melissa Akin of Los Lunas, NM. He is also survived by his grandchildren Barbara, Phillip, Neveah, Samuel, and Logan.

Funeral services for Donald will be held at 10:00 AM on April 10, 2026, at Freedom Worship Center, 727 Cortez Street, Los Lunas, NM. A graveside service will follow at Terrace Grove Cemetery at 12:30 in Belen, NM.
