Ernest Olivares, age 70, a resident of Belen, New Mexico, peacefully passed away on February 4, 2026. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Ernest was known for his incredible work ethic and his unwavering dedication to providing for his family. During his distinguished military service, he was honored with several awards, including the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
Ernest's life was defined by his passions and his sense of humor; he loved to joke and tease, bringing light to those around him. He was an avid outdoorsman who found peace while fishing in Mississippi. He enjoyed bike riding and photography. He loved John Deer tractor and his favorite movie was the Wizard of Oz. At home, he took great pride in raising his chickens and goats. A man of faith, he was a member of the Baptist church and had a deep love for country and Cajun music.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruben and Inez Olivarez, and his brothers, Jessie and Chavelo.
Ernest is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Anita Olivares; his daughter, Melinda Granger and husband Joseph; and his sons, Justin and wife Kim, Hank; and wife Lacy; his sister, Rita Reyes and husband Alfonzo; 4 brothers: John Ruben and wife Louisa, Louis and wife Betty, Paul and wife Bert, and Joe Robert, along with many other beloved family members. He also leaves behind a legacy through his 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services for Ernest will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Noblin Funeral Service Belen Chapel. A visitation will take place at 10:00 am, followed by the funeral service at 10:30 am. Ernest will be laid to rest on Monday, February 16, 2026, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 9:00 am. Pallbearers will be Christopher Delgado, Kelly Kuenstler, Michael Olivares, Kevin Olivares, Owen Olivares, Grady Olivares, and Jeremiah Granger.
