Gavina T. Martinez was born in Miami, AZ on March 28, 1922, she was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, and 1 sister and the youngest of her eight children Augustine (Gus) C Martinez, Jr. lovingly known as Poofie. Gavina is survived by Hope Mapes Gallon and Clarence of San Pablo, CA., Eugene (Gene) Martinez, of Albuquerque, NM, Conchita (Crunch)Saravia of Albuquerque, NM, Alma I. Colbert of Richmond Hills, GA, Antonio (Tony) B. Martinez and Yvonne of Redding, CA, Susan E. Barr and John of Albuquerque, NM, Leticia (Lettie) Emmerling and Bob of Aurora, CO and 19 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great Grandchildren all of whom held a piece of her heart. Gavina was a renaissance woman who lived her life in Arizona and California before her passing in Albuquerque, NM. In her early years she was taught the fine art of embroidery and sowing which helped her mother to craft designer shirts for women. In her youth, she worked at a dude ranch in Arizona where she learned the art of hospitality, a trait she used daily and passed on to her children. She never turned away a stranger for a meal always saying, "There is always room for another bean in the pot and another plate at the table." Gavina was raised Roman Catholic but converted to Christianity after the passing of her youngest son, Gus. She never finished schooling as a child, yet graduated from Bible school in her early 70s. She loved the Word of God, her local church and the Holy Land, having visited three times. She was artistic, loved music, dancing and a good joke. She was known for her humor and love of Snicker Bars! Gavina was an avid gardener and lived in Belen, NM for a time raising roses which were named after famous celebrities and Presidents of the US. She is missed by all who she met and those she impacted with her life. If Mom left a legacy it is, love of family, grace always and respect for one another.
