This week the small town of Belen, New Mexico lost a lifetime member of their community. George O Chavez passed away peacefully on June 4, 2022.
He was born and raised in Belen and was a resident there until his passing.
George lived a fulfilling life as a husband, father, grand-father, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to many. As a young adult he graduated from High School and attended college in Las Cruces, NM. After 1 yr. in college, he voluntarily signed the military draft (Army) for 2 yrs. George was stationed in Washington, and this is where he met the mother of his children, Norma Cissell. After serving his country he continued his education and received his teaching degree. This enabled him to start his career with Belen Consolidated Schools.
George was preceded in death by his parents Fermin and Maria (Gabaldon) Chavez; brothers, Emilio (Milo) and Salomon Chavez; sister, Sofie Padilla; son, Matthew Chavez; and grandson, Tony Tucker.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Carmen Chavez; children, Derrick (Monica), Kimberly Gibbons, Douglas (Sandra), Brian (Luzinda), and Sandra Moya: and daughter-in-law Erin Chavez; George is also survied by 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. A Viewing will begin at 8:00 a.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 9:00 a.m., and a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Internment will Follow at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens.
