Hazel Poissot Obituary

Hazel Marie Tipps Poissot passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024. Hazel was the 4th of 5 children and born in east Texas. She graduated from Deming High School in 1967, and then went on to marry twice, and had 3 children, her first child passed after only a few days.

She moved to Ruidoso, NM in 1977, where she joined the Ruidoso Police Department as a dispatcher, soon promoting to patrolman. She was the first woman detective in Ruidoso. In 1985, she resigned from the Police Department and moved to Carlsbad, NM where she started her education at NMSU-Carlsbad. In 1988, she moved again to Las Cruces, NM where she earned a Bachelor's degree in English with endorsements in math and social studies from NMSU.

She was a public school teacher at Capitan Middle School for five years. She then moved on to the Corrections Department where she initiated the SOAR program for offenders. In 2000, she moved to Los Lunas, continuing her work with the corrections department, and resided in Los Lunas until her passing.

Hazel always had a cup of coffee and a smile for the officer she worked with at the Correctional Facility. She loved working in Corrections and she loved teaching adults basic life skills. Her sense of humor was unlike any other.

Hazel is preceded in death by her mother, Edna; her father, Carlos; her brother, Edward; her sisters, Carol Sue and Doris Jean; and her first born son, George Jackson.

Hazel is survived by her daughters, Jonenne Rice and her husband Joel of Los Lunas, NM; Renee Burden, of Goldwaithe, TX; her 5 grand children, Justin Romero and his wife Anita of Belen, NM, Audrey Poissot of Edgewood, NM, Carah Keller and her husband Jon of Copperas Cove, TX, Brandon Poissot and his wife Brynn of Lampasas TX, and Lil Cody Burden of Lampasas, TX.
