Obituary

On Saturday June 18th, James Finnie Sloan, known to most as Jim Sloan, loving father of four, grandfather, and great grandfather unexpectedly passed away at the age of 66. James was born on February 22nd, 1956, in Brownsville, Texas to Betty Lou Tabet Herman and CS Sloan. Jim served in the Navy on the USS Norton Sound and was honorably discharged on November 26th 1975. Jim grew up in the town of Belen and was well known as a historian for the Harvey House. Everyone who knew him knew they could always count on a good story anytime they saw him. He had a strong passion for photography, and even attended college for it. He later found a passion for looking at old photos and learning the history of everything around him, He spent most days learning his family history, doing genealogy, and riding his Harley. Jim is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Lou Tabet Herman; his father, CS Sloan; son, James Gary Sloan; brother, Chris Tabet; niece, Cayla Tabet; and his granddaughter, Trinity Sloan. Jim is survived in by his son, Jason Finnie Sloan (Courtney); daughter, Laura Sloan and Richard Martin; brothers, Leslie Sloan (Verginia), Larry Sloan, Jay Tabet, Larry Tabet; sister, Debbie Tabet; grandkids, Brandon Saul (Jade), Jacob Saul, Michael Vallejos (Kaityln), Breanna Vallejos, Emma Sloan, Wyatt Wimberly, Reagen Curly, Haylee Sloan, Jake Finnie Sloan; great-grandson, Zion Saul; and his close friend Mary Akin (Nevaeh). Jim was remembered as many different things; a passion he held his whole life was cars and history. If your car had a problem and you couldn't figure it out... Jim could. He also owned and was the mechanic for a car lot and had a huge love for riding his Harley. His kids remember him as a history buff. If you gave him a picture he would find out where, why, and when it was taken. In his free time, he loved watching the history channel and volunteering his time and knowledge to the Harvey house. Although we hate to see him go, we knew his heart was always full of love for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cars, and history. When he left, he passed along a part of his huge heart to all of us. Sincerest thank you to the Harvey house from the Sloan family. A visitation for Jim will take place on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at 9:30 am at the Harvey House Museum in Belen, New Mexico. A Funeral Service will take place following the visitation. Interment will immediately follow the service at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens.
