John Bryan Hyde, 77, a lifelong resident of Valencia County, passed away on March 2, 2026.
A dedicated family man and a proud Christian, John was known for his quick wit and his ability to make anyone smile with a well-timed joke. He had a natural ease about him, and those who knew him well will remember him as a man who could talk to strangers like they were old friends. Whether he was catching a Western on repeat, trying his luck at the casino, or heading out for a day of shooting, John lived his life with character and warmth. He had a deep love for his family and a particular adoration for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John served his country with honor, earning a Purple Heart, two Silver Stars, and a Bronze Star. He found simple joys in the classics, particularly "old" country music from legends like Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, and George Jones, and he always seemed to have a knack for finding a winning hand at a poker game.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of 39 years, Carl Anne Hyde; his second wife of 5 years, Sharon Hyde; his daughter, Crystal Gayle Pettis; and his parents, Clyde and Betty Hyde.
He is survived by his brother, Jeff Hyde (and wife); his daughter, Lindsey Bland (and husband Travis); his grandchildren, Bryan McDowell (and wife Desi), Mikayla McDowell, Ashlynn Selva, Kinley Selva, Courtney Sawyer, Garrett Pettis, and Kolby Casper; 14 great-grandchildren; and his loyal lifetime friends, Luther Morgan and Rodger Hopkins.
A service for John will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 11:00 am. Honorary pallbearers are Bryan McDowell, Travis Bland, Lane Garcia, Chase Carrasco, Adam Bland, and Garrett Pettis.
