John was a deeply caring husband, a profoundly loving father and grandfather, and a steadfast friend. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Juan and Geneva Velasco; his father, John Velasco Jr.; his mother, Mary Cano; his stepmother, Antonia Velasco; and his siblings, Geneva Rogers, Robert Velasco, Catarina Najera Jr., and Marylou Montoya.

John is survived by his wife, Dixie Velasco, his children Mark Velasco, Jacqueline Velasco, Alex Velasco, Bernadette Lopez, Ricardo Hernandez and Mariano Hernandez. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Jessica Velasco, Zachary Velasco, John Anthony Hernandez, Tiffany Salazar, David Rodriguez, Antoino Lopez and Aliyah Eylicio his siblings, Richard, Arthur, Bernie, Mary, and Didi Velasco, and Diane Roberts ; his step-siblings, Betty, Joanne, Rita, and Freddy ; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
