Maria Wagner, who was born on March 30, 1954, as "Maria del Rosario Esparza" in Guadalajara, Mexico, passed away on May 9, 2025, at Presbyterian Downtown in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Maria met her husband, Lester James Wagner, a retired U.S.
Navy veteran. They decided to wed and moved to the United States, where Maria earned her citizenship. They built a loving life together in San Antonio and Socorro, New Mexico.
Maria raised her children with a strong sense of family and love, working throughout.
She spent over 30 years working for Jess Landers and worked at Roadrunner and Bodega's Steakhouse. She stopped working at age 68 due to her terminal cancer diagnosis. Her family desires to honor her indescribable legacy as a mother and grandmother, as well as an encourager, and there are countless stories to share. She remained a steady, comforting presence for everyone, always carrying herself with grace and choosing love and patience. She was baptized Mormon and later embraced aspects of the Catholic faith, maintaining a strong personal spirituality throughout her life. She was the supportive person that others leaned on, and the rock people turned to when they didn't know what to do.
Maria Wagner is survived by her daughter Esther Wagner and son-in-law, Joe Torres; as well as daughter Irma Fourmy and son-in-law Richard ("Rich") Fourmy. Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Lester James Wagner, in 2002; her sister Juanita Wagner, on October 20, 2024, as well as her son, David James Wagner, who passed away unexpectedly on February 15, 2025. Maria also lost her oldest grandson, Bobby Greene of Phoenix, Arizona, in 2018. Maria is survived by a host of grandchildren, including her second-oldest grandson Ray Greene of Hawaii; granddaughter Amarissa Gonzales of Phoenix, Arizona, granddaughter Alizaya Gonzales of Phoenix, Arizona, as well as Socorro, New Mexico grandsons Joe Torres, Jim Torres, Jaydon Torres, and Jarick Torres. Maria also leaves behind friends and many people who loved her in the communities of Socorro and San Antonio, New Mexico.
