Mavis Loretta Johnson, beloved daughter, aunt, and sister, went home to heaven on January 16, 2025, at the age of 86. She was born on May 10, 1938, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, to Gyda and Marvin Johnson and was the older sister to her brother, Wayne. Mavis enjoyed a rural upbringing surrounded by the natural beauty of rivers and lakes. She often fondly remarked that she attended a one-room schoolhouse, reminiscent of the setting in "Little House on the Prairie".
In the 1950s, the Johnson family moved to New Mexico, where Mavis spent the rest of her life in Albuquerque. She graduated from Highland High School in 1956. Shortly after high school, Mavis began working at Montgomery Wards Department Store in Downtown Albuquerque. She transitioned with the store when it moved to the new Winrock Shopping Center, where she worked for 23 years. After her time at Montgomery Ward, she joined the team that opened the first Ross Dress for Less in Albuquerque, where she was employed for 21 years.
Mavis was a lifelong country music fan with her favorite band, The Wilburn Brothers. Throughout the years, she visited Nashville, Tennessee, numerous times and enjoyed attending live music events during its golden age at the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium, and other local venues.
Mavis is remembered as a kind, generous, and thoughtful person. She cherished her nieces, Charlene and Ammie, and her nephew, Wesley. Mavis always offered support, comfort, and valuable life lessons.
She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Lester; her mother, Gyda Harriet; her brother, Wayne Lee; and his wife, Ramona; her nephew, Wesley Carl; and her niece, Ammie Lea. She is survived by her niece, Charlene, and her wife, Erin, as well as her best friends, Carol Stromberg, George, and David Padilla. Mavis is also survived by her cherished extended family in Minnesota and Belen. Services will be held at a later date to be determined.
