Thomas Robertson Obituary
Thomas Doyle Robertson peacefully passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 90.
Tom was born on August 24, 1935, in Slaton, Texas, the third of four children born to EG and Erica Robertson. In 1941, the family moved to the railroad town of Belen, New Mexico, where Tom would build a lifelong connection to the community and the railroad industry. He graduated from Belen High School in 1953 before entering the United States Army, a service he remained deeply proud of throughout his life.
Following his military service, Tom attended the University of New Mexico on the GI Bill, graduating in 1963 with a degree in finance. He went on to work for the Santa Fe Railroad as a brakeman and conductor for 45 years, dedicating his career to the railroad he loved.
In 1962, Tom married Karen Jeanne Johnson, and together they shared a wonderful life centered on family, work, and travel. They raised two sons: Doyle Ray Robertson (Jennifer) of Brooklyn, New York, and Brian Thomas Robertson (Aleta) of Omaha, Nebraska. Tom was also a proud grandfather to Savannah and Hugo.
Tom and Karen shared a lifelong love of adventure and travel. Their honeymoon took them to Acapulco, Mexico, and after Tom's graduation from UNM (and before children), they embarked on a six-week journey through England and Europe, returning aboard the historic Queen Mary shortly before the ship's retirement. Over the years, they traveled extensively by train, car, pop-up trailer, pickup camper, motor home, bus tour, and plane. Family trips often included visits to Nebraska to see Karen's relatives, with sons Doyle and Brian and family dogs Silky and Velvet along for the ride in the backseat playpen constructed by Tom. Memorable vacations included a houseboat trip on Lake Powell, visits to the Grand Canyon and Carlsbad Caverns with cousins, and cruises to Alaska, Mexico, eastern Canada, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Jimmy Robertson and wife Lois; his sister Paula Tucker and husband Johnnie; and his brother-in-law Richard Turrietta.
He is survived by his beloved wife Karen; his sons Doyle and Brian and their families; his sister Mary Rita Turrietta; and many cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Funeral services will be held at Los Chavez Baptist Church on Saturday, June 20, 2026. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Los Chaves or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as Tom was extremely proud to have served his country.
